A large part of the IT infrastructure of the University Computer Centre is used to support services that have become indispensable for meaningful work. Thus, the majority of the IT services offered are aimed at all employees of Leipzig University. For quick access, we have summarised the most important services for your PC workstation at a glance.
Basic technical knowledge for your PC workstation
The basic technical knowledge listed below for your PC workstation will provide you with a solid basis for using the services offered by the University Computer Centre as well as secure and fast access to the university network.
The Uni-Login is the user ID that gives you access to many of the services offered by the University Computer Centre, such as WLAN use or e-mail.
With the introduction of the identity management system at Leipzig University, all new users will gradually be assigned anonymous user names. New employees who do not already have a student university login will receive a university login from the account manager responsible for their institution.
Via VPN (Virtual Private Network) you can access secure services from home that are otherwise only accessible in the university network, just like from your workplace. An encrypted connection is established via the normal internet connection through the VPN client to the VPN endpoint of Leipzig University. After authentication, access is the same as from the campus network.

With the online remote help tool ISL Light, we support them in solving problems or for maintenance and repair purposes via the network, without the need for a service technician to come to your site. This is a temporary, one-time solution. A permanent solution is also possible, in which case the session must also be re-triggered each time. Permanent access not authorised by the user is also not possible here.

Notes on PC setup
In the following you will find important information for connecting a computer to the data network of the University of Leipzig, as well as an explanation of measures to be taken in order to put the PC into operation.
In order to connect a computer to the data network of the University of Leipzig, some requirements must be met:
- The computer must have an up-to-date operating system.
- An updating virus scanner (Sophos) must be installed and activated.

To the Firewall Concept - The computer is connected to a network socket with a data cable. If cabling measures need to be carried out or connections need to be made, please contact the Planning and Technology Department. This network socket must be connected to a free port of an associated network distributor (switch). If there are no free ports, the URZ administrators will inform you in the following IP application.
- The computer must be configured with the unique IP address assigned by the URZ.
To put the PC into operation, the following measures must still be carried out on your PC:
- Enter IP address, netmask and gateway as well as name server
- Configuring the computer name (associated with the IP address)
- Setting up users Installing a virus scanner (at the University of Leipzig this is Sophos with Autoupdate)
- Installing the Windows and Office updates
These activities are assisted by on-site IT support staff or URZ staff.

Many of our services are available via the internet or intranet. We have compiled the important offers and services for working in a home office for you here.
To access the university network from outside the university buildings, you have to dial in via VPN. You can use the VPN client for this purpose.
Please note that access to e.g. your home directory, group drives or the intranet including the administrative circulars and the und dem staff directory is only possible within the university network.
