Leipzig University has concluded a co-contract for certain Microsoft products. The products can be used by the faculties and institutions of our university free of charge. On this page we inform you about what you have to consider.

The products Windows 10, Office 2019 (once per user), Windows Server and the application servers MS Exchange, Sharepoint can be used by the faculties and institutions of the university free of charge. The user is entitled to use the software only in the licensed form and number and only for work in research and teaching on computers at the University of Leipzig and in his or her area of responsibility.

  • This contract does not apply to employees of the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital AöR.

Microsoft SQL Server and Remote Desktop Access Licences (RD Cals) are not included in this contract and must be purchased separately via Asknet's software shop.

Windows Desktop (e.g. Windows 10, 11) can be installed completely, but is an upgrade in terms of licensing law. This means that a so-called basic operating system licence (at least Win 98, OEM or System Builder) must be available for the computer in question. Proof of the licence is provided by the COA (Certificate of Authenticity), which can be found as a sticker on the device or on the packaging. When installing the upgrade, both licences "merge", i.e. the basic operating system licence may not be used elsewhere or in parallel.

Windows Desktop and Office are licensed via a Key Management Server (KMS) within the University's data network. Portable devices must be registered in the WLAN "UniLeipzig-intern".

Licence keys for servers are issued in consultation with Mr Steffen Rettig, Infrastructure Department.

IT officers

Access to the application images from the MS Landesvertrag is only granted to IT officers in the faculties and institutions. The IT officer ensures that the software is used in accordance with the licence conditions and actively prevents misuse in his/her area of responsibility. The IT officer is regularly informed by the URZ about the licensing conditions. The nomination is made by the head (dean, director, ...) or administrative head of the respective institution in writing or by email to Mr Thomas Braatz, URZ, Augustusplatz 10, braatz(AT)rz.uni-leipzig.de. As far as possible, we are looking for permanent, non-academic staff. As far as possible, they are non-academic staff with sound IT knowledge. The appointment of SHK is not possible.

Institutions without an IT officer should contact the service desk.
